COVID-19 and the American Workplace

The Wage and Hour Division is committed to protecting and enhancing the welfare of workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Federal laws, including the Fair Labor Standards Act and the Family and Medical Leave Act, provide critical worker protections regarding wages and hours worked and job-protected leave during the pandemic. The resources below offer information on common issues employers and employees face during the COVID-19 pandemic.


Karen Welton

Karen Welton is the CORPS (Community Outreach and Resource Planning Specialist) for the Pittsburgh District Office of the U.S. Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division. She started with the Wage and Hour Division in 1997, working as an Investigator for 19 years. She moved to the CORPS position in 2016, providing outreach to stakeholders across Western PA, West Virginia, and Southwest Virginia. Karen has extensive training and experience in enforcing the Fair Labor Standards Act, Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act and several other Federal labor laws including those dealing with government contracts, wage garnishments, and H-2A and H-2B workers. She is the recipient of a Secretary’s Exceptional Achievement Award and an Administrator’s Impact Award. She has also been a Trainer at Basic I national training for new investigators and at a 2017 Government Contracts Prevailing Wage Conference. She is a graduate of John Carroll University with a BSBA in Management and Spanish and served one year in the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in San Antonio, Texas.


Technology Trends and Security Considerations for the Payroll Professional

Jason will discuss new technology trends for the business professional. In addition, he will review security trends available for use in today's ever risky remote environment. These tools will help to keep data secure and allow for better collaboration within payroll departments. Also, a review of minimum security requirements from vendors used by payroll professionals.


Jason Reljac

Jason is a Manager in the Schneider Downs Technology Advisors Group. He has more than 20 years of experience in the development, implementation and maintenance of both computer software and hardware systems. At Schneider Downs, Jason manages development and implementations of two internally developed applications, SD inSITE and simpLEASE Accounting. SD inSITE is an automated workforce management tool, while simpLEASE Accounting is a tool developed to assist with lessor lease accounting. He also assists in the implementation of various ERP and HRIS applications for a wide range of industries, including not-for-profit organizations, manufacturing and distribution companies. Prior to joining Schneider Downs, Jason worked for Golf Digest Information Systems, a New York Times Company subsidiary, where he worked on the development, implementation and training of golf course management software aimed at regional golf destinations.
